CodeWizardsHQ offers live classes in computer programming. We’re reviewing a special one time class that my 5th grader got to take. The usual courses last 12 weeks. You can get more information at their general page and their homeschooling page.
CodeWizardsHQ was really new for my son because it’s the first time he’s taken a live, real-time online coding course. This isn’t CDs or an online self-paced course. He had an interactive instructor for an hour. He really loved his instructor, Sabrina, and had a really good time taking the course. I stayed close by to help with technical issues, but Sabrina was able to direct my son quickly and they were able to sort out any questions right away. It was all very independent from me, and I felt like if he were signed up for the course on a weekly basis, I wouldn’t really have to do anything to help out other than just have him sitting in front of the computer at the right time.
Students get access to a lot of extra things in addition to just the class, like a personal website and extra 1-on-1 help. If you’ve ever tried coding you know how frustrating it can be to get stuck on something, which makes the extra help a really nice feature.
We were able to set up a live class at a pretty convenient time for us, even though my schedule is very full.
I made sure ahead of time that my son had the computer set up, that we had done a test meeting, and that his headphones and microphone were working.
His class ran over an hour while his instructor took the students through the lesson. My son coded dialogue into a comic book cartoon to make the characters say what he wanted to say. It was very open-ended and creative and although a LOT of instruction and learning was going on, it was extremely interactive and fun.

I’d like this so much better than going through a coding book on my own. My son likes to go through coding books but he enjoyed this more and he learned faster than when he has to puzzle things out on his own. Like I mentioned before, when you get stuck coding something it’s so frustrating when it takes so long to figure out the answer. Having a live instructor made the time go really fast. The instructor, Sabrina, was awesome, too. She was really good with the kids, kept them having fun but kept them on track. My son liked the class a lot and he had a great time. He enjoyed it so much that he’s begging me to sign up for 12 weeks. He says that HTML is probably too easy for him to need a long class in and he’d like to take one of the more challenging classes. The cost of this class was high enough that he would need to choose a 12-week course as a big birthday/Christmas present or drop one of the other things he does. I believe in investing in my children’s education, so I encourage them to take classes, even though it costs me a lot of extra money each year. I will probably end up budgeting this into our school year expenses for next year for him.
I usually prefer to have my children take local classes rather than online classes, but in this case I feel different and prefer online. Why? Because I know that in a local class my son would only do coding during the class hour. CodingHQ offers those extras, including 24/7 access to the coding platform. My son is very independent and I know he’d mess around with coding for hours a day on something like that. Basically, I feel like in this type of situation my son will make better progress with an online, live class.
